When I was asked if I would like to review the Deiss PRO zester and grater, it was easy for me to say yes. As someone who loves kitchen gadgets which do what they’re supposed to, I was keen to see what the Deiss grater could do. I’m definitely not the sort of person to buy the latest gadget just to say I’d got one – the Kitchen Shed gets packed and moved at least twice a year so everything has to earn its place.


Immediately you can see the Deiss grater is different from the well known brand most people are likely to be familiar with. In fact, the slimline design of the Deiss reminds me of OH’s carpentry tools – maybe the designer was inspired by a rasp ? The grater feels sturdy and comfortable in use and once cleaned, you can simply clip on the safety cover before popping it into a drawer. I like the fact the grater does a grand job of zesting and grating as a two in one device is a definite bonus for me with my limited drawer space. I found the Deiss can grate anything from hard cheeses to ginger and whizzes through garlic, chocolate and vegetables!


One of our favourite quick and easy mid-week meals is Lemon & Ginger Salmon and it was the perfect recipe for me to put the Diess PRO zester and grater through its paces. I used the Diess over a board to give a better view in the photos but the slimline profile of the grater makes it easy to use directly over a bowl or pan.

Serves: 4 portions
Ingredients
  • 4 salmon fillets
    Marinade:
  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon
  • 2 garlic cloves - crushed
  • 2 cm piece of grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
    Topping:
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
Instructions
  1. Mix all the marinade ingredients together and cover the salmon fillets with the marinade. Marinate for 15 mins to 30 mins max.
  2. Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 6 /200℃ /400℉.
  3. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Serve with broccoli and rice.
Notes
Preparation time does not include marinating time of 15 minutes.

 

The grater made light work of zesting lemon and grating ginger and I even had a go at cheffy style garlic grating – I generally use a garlic press but apparently grating garlic is said to release more flavour. That said, my being a little clumsy, the grater being really sharp and me valuing my finger ends, I’m not totally converted to garlic grating. I think I’ll stick to lemons and ginger as they are much safer to grate and the non-slip handle on the Diess is a great safety feature. (BTW – I keep ginger in the freezer and grate it from frozen, it’s so much easier and as you can see from the photo I don’t bother peeling it)
